David Merril: Siftables

David Merril is a grad student in the fluid interfaces group at Mit's media lab. He work on new technologies that give us more and better abilities to do things we want to do. His main interest now is the siftables project. A siftables is an interactive computer the size of a cookie they're to be moved around by hand, they can sense eche other, they can sense their motion and they have a screen and wireless radio, they are phisycal like the blocks you can move them just by reaching out and grasping and the are an example of a new ecosystem of tools for manipulating digital information

With this we can start to explore some new and fun interaction styles.

The siftables is configured to show video

An example is a music sequencing and live perfomance tool in wich siftables act as sounds like lead, bass and drums

This is a better match to the way our brains and bodies work

Leadership: What is a leader?

The green engineering

A familiar engineering tenet says design is a trade-off — strength versus weight, weight versus speed, speed versus torque, and the like. Also to be considered, of course, is cost. Now add another trade-off: the environment. Green engineering throws an additional monkey wrench into the constant tug-of-war that is design

The general goal of green engineering is the optimization of energy, resources, or environmental impact. And, as with many other optimization tasks, computers and recent technology play a pivotal role.
Consider such applications as monitoring power-plant emissions, collecting rainforest data, and measuring electrical signals, which seem on the surface to have little in common, but that, in fact, are all forms of green engineering. Some of these processes were previously optimized for cost, so “reoptimizing” for environmental efficiency would seemingly be more expensive. It turns out this is not necessarily true
